In 2004 three young men who had studied traditional architecture in the Master's program at Shinshu University started a new construction company with the support of Obusedo. This company is Shukei Jigyo. Shukei Jigyo is aiming to "repair" old houses rather than restore them.
The restoration of old houses is valued socially, and there is a growing market for old houses and their parts. However on the other hand, in most cases the old house is moved from the village it was a part of, and repairing the house on the spot and renewing its interior is unheard of.
As a result the vanishing of beautiful farm villages continues. Putting the brakes on this is Shukei Jigyo's mission. For that purpose they of course re-thatch old roofs, collect old tiles and create authentic earthen walls, and are passionately cultivating a wide range of technique like plant raising, earthwork, and stone laying that are needed to maintain the form of old farm houses.
Starting with re-thatching the roof of the old Matsuzawa residence, they then were instrumental in the construction of the Masuichi Kyakuden and the restoration of an old photo studio. While planning the maintenance and beautification of the Obuse area, they strive with the will and ambition to improve the lifestyles of the people who live there.
